Socotra Island once called Dioskouridou

When visiting this amazing landscape, you can't help but to think you've been transported to a different planet completely. This Island is teaming with 800 extremely rare flora and fauna. Socotra Island is located in the Indian Ocean 250 km from Somalia and 340 km from Yemen. The glorious trees from this island have been preserved through the long geological isolation, with some varieties being 20 million years old! Abundant supplies of Frankincense, myrrh, dragon's blood, and aloe were valuable commodities that were traded widely and made Socotra a destination for fleets from many parts of the known world. By the first century B.C., Socotra was the world's foremost supplier of these rare and expensive resins.

Dragon Blood Tree

Dragon's Blood Tree
Perhaps one the most striking plants on this island would have to be the Dragons Blood tree, with a shape resembling an umbrella or a mushroom. Its red sap was the "dragon's blood" of the ancients who lived there, in which they used as medicine and dye. Along with other plants on Socotra, cinnabari is thought to have derived from the Tethya flora. It is considered a remnant of the Mio-Pliocene Laurasian subtropical forests that are now almost extinct due to the extensive desertification of North Africa.

Cucumber tree

A rare Cucumber Tree (Dendrosicyos socotranum).
Cucumbers are climbing plants or shrubs, but in Socotra its different, the tree grows up to four meters high. Fig Trees are seen growing out of pockets in limestone on the island .The bizarre looking plants hold water in their swollen trunks. It is known to produce huge stems which may measure from about 6 to 12 or more inches across at its base, and tapering to a point at their apex, at 4 to 6 feet. The main stem produces numerous smaller branches along its length.

Desert Rpse

Desert rose
Adenium obesum is actually a succulent member of the Oleander family (so the sap is a poison). It originates in East Africa; it will grow from 6 1/2 to 10 feet in the wild. It has fleshy leaves and beautiful 2-inch pink open-trumpet shaped flowers. It is a succulent, and forms more of a bush than a tree. Small, terminal clusters (corymbs) of flowers are produced during most of the year, if many plants bloom at once, it is a good sign that the rainy season is coming soon.
